About Us

In the present cultural scenario of the country, Bihar and Madhubani paintings is so much oriented together that the two has become synonymous with one another and now a Patna based craftswomen and artist Mrs. Shivani & Ashok Biswas has added a new dimension to the scene with a unique craft called 'Tikuli'

Tikuli craft, originating from word ‘Tikli’ or ‘Bindi’, is paintings on the glazed surface of hardboard Plates. The several hundred years old craft originated in Patna city with 500 families earning their livelihood from it. Now Mrs. Shivani & Ashok Biswas is the only exponent of this craft. The process of making the plates is very tedious and involves fifteen stages. Firstly, the hardboard is cut into different geometrical shapes of varied sizes. The edges and the surface of the plates are rough. Hence sandpaper is rubbed on it for smoothness. Then the plates are painted with enamel paint and dried in sun for days. Process is repeated after the plates get dried completely.

Mrs. Shivani & Ashok Biswas has mastered in doing fine work with Enamel paints which is very difficult task. The hardboard plates are based on a Japanese technique. Thus the unique craft tikuli is an amalgamation of Japanese technique and ingenuity of Mrs. Shivani & Ashok Biswas.

Mrs. Shivani & Ashok Biswas performs yet another noble task. Her team of artists, who assists him in her work, comprises mostly of women. She provides them job who hail from lower middle class and as such poor economic back-ground. The women about 150 in number earn commendable amount. Thus the craft which once upon a time supported 5000 craftsmen is still performing the same noble task. The master crafts man of tikuli is still not happy with the situation. She would like the intervention of Govt. in the marketing of tikulis. If the Govt. purchase and place orders for tikuli it would mean taking away a great deal of burden from the crafts man. By this the craftsmen will be able to concentrate on their craft. This is important according to Mrs. Shivani & Ashok Biswas for selling involves uncertainty and risks and being craftsman they are unaware of the process and the tact required in it. Nevertheless the woman who has seen worst conditions is content with the present situation and her future plans in to serve the craft, which has given him name and fame.
